St Michael’s Church has a fine musical heritage of which we are very proud, and it is one which we are determined to preserve for the benefit of our own as well as future generations.
Our robed choir is an important part of this tradition and continues to thrive, although we are ever conscious of the need to evolve and to continue to recruit new boys, girls and adult choristers into the choir.
If you or your child would like to know more about joining our choir, please click here.
There are also currently vacancies in the main choir for adult singers (some Anglican choral experience or good sight-reading skills preferred), particularly at present to the Alto line. Please contact the Parish Office for more information.
St Michael's also offers a number of Choral Scholarships - for more information click here.
We try to ensure that, as well as gaining a musical education, children in the choir learn about the Christian faith. The junior members of the choir meet in the Lady Chapel at the front of the Church for a short session of age-appropriate teaching and discussion during the service. This starts at the beginning of the sermon and the children return back into church just after the Peace.
Choral Worship with Zoom
During this time when the church is closed during Coronavirus and we are unable to sing together, Jonathan Newsome has arranged and produced some virtual performances with members of our Choir. In addition to instrumental pieces on the piano, organ and even lute, various solos and 'a capella' four part anthems from members of the Choir, these have enriched our Zoom worship on Sundays:
Sunday 3rd May 2020 - Fourth Sunday of Easter (Good Shepherd Sunday)
The Lord is my Shepherd by Howard Goodall
Sunday 31st May 2020 - Pentecost
I will sing with the Spirit by John Rutter
Sunday 28th June 2020 - Third Sunday after Trinity
A prayer of St Richard of Chichester by Len J. White
